“The Innocent Sleep” is an intricate novel filled with twists and turns that make it hard to put down. The story pulls you into the lives of Harry and Robin from the beginning.
The story opens with a tragedy in Tangier when Harry leaves his sleeping son, Dillon, alone in the house. During the short time Harry is gone, an earthquake destroys the home. Dillon’s body is never found and he’s presumed dead. Harry is overcome with grief and can’t accept that his son is dead.
Five years later, Harry and Robin are trying to move forward, yet still grieve for their lost son, when Harry sees a boy he believes is Dillon. With Robin now pregnant and concerned over Harry’s mental state, Harry decides he needs proof of Dillon’s existence before telling his wife their son is alive. Not knowing the real reason Harry is so aloof, his attitude towards this pregnancy has Robin concerned the baby is causing him more mental anguish than he can handle. She’s worried Harry is becoming depressed and can’t face going through treatment with him again.
Even as their relationship deteriorates, Harry decides he must find Dillon. When he tells Robin about seeing Dillon, Robin becomes convinced she must leave Harry and move in with her parents. Harry’s only option is to find Dillon and bring him home.
Karen Perry (a writing duo) have done a wonderful job of alternating two protagonists with first person points of view. The reader gets a deep insight into the characters while the plot delivers plenty of suspense. “The Innocent Sleep” is one part thriller, one part emotional journey. The authors maintain a delicate balance between suspense and complex characters. Kudos to Karen Perry for creating such a wonderful read!
