The Civil War era was a pivotal time in American history, marked not only by the battles fought but also by changing roles for women. However, as men left for war, women stepped up to fill vital roles on the home front and even on the battlefield. Thus, the role of a woman in the Civil War era changed dramatically. Even though she was six months pregnant, Elizabeth worked hard to bury over 100 soldiers in very hot weather. Her determination shows the strength of women during the Civil War, highlighting their essential contributions to the war effort and the community.
Harriet Tubman: A Heroine of the Civil War

Mary Edwards Walker was a trailblazing surgeon and the only woman to earn the Medal of Honor for her work during the Civil War. Despite facing doubt and resistance because she was a woman, she became a doctor on the battlefield. She volunteered as a surgeon for the Union Army, helping soldiers with essential medical care. Walker’s important contributions opened doors for future female medical professionals. Her bravery and commitment to her job challenged the norms of her time and helped pave the way for women in medicine.
