The 12 Scams of Christmas at Authors on the Air

November 18, 2014 By Terry Leave a Comment

On November 19 at 8:00 pm, EST (5:00 pm, PST), I’ll be talking about the 12 Scams of Christmas with Authors on the Air host Pam Stack. This promises to be a fun time and you can even phone in with questions. There are so many scams that really ramp up during the holidays that this is a perfect time to brush up on what’s hot in the scam department this year.

If you can’t make the live broadcast, the session will be available on a podcast. So, get ready. We’ll have 12 snarky tips for you to help avoid the scammers and don’t be surprised if you even hear me mention Jolly Old St. Nick himself. Don’t worry, he’s not the scam!

Get more info at the Authors on the Air website here.

Debut mystery author Kathy Aarons launch party

September 3, 2014 By Terry Leave a Comment

Death is Like a Box of ChocolatesOn Saturday, September 6 at 4:00 pm, Mysterious Galaxy will host a launch party for mystery author Kathy Aarons and her new novel, “Death is Like a Box of Chocolates.” The party will be at Mysterious Galaxy, 7051 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, Suite #302, San Diego.

When Berkley publishing told Aarons they wanted a mystery set in a combination book and chocolate shop, she said her response was, “I couldn’t resist. What could be more perfect?” Obviously, Mysterious Galaxy felt the same because they chose “Death is Like a Box of Chocolates” for their September Fantastic Firsts Cozy Book Club said Aarons

A complete list of those fantastic firsts is available at http://www.mystgalaxy.com/fantasic-firsts-cozy-mystery-series-starters.

New York Times author interviews
Interview with international bestselling author M.J. Rose
Behind the story of The Wrong Quarry with Max Allan Collins
Behind the story with NYT bestseller Allison Brennan
Behind the story of Fear Nothing with Lisa Gardner

In “Death is Like a Box of Chocolates,” chocolatier Michelle and her best friend Erica must pick through an assortment of suspects when the town portrait photographer is murdered or watch the future of their dream store melt away.

Aarons, who says she loves writing, is also passionate about expanding creative writing education for youth. “I volunteer for the Canyon Crest Academy Writing Conference, the only free high school writing conference in the country. One of the speakers noted that because of the inspirational and educational workshops it provides, San Diego is going to have more than its fair share of accomplished authors and writing professionals in the future. I also recently joined the board for Playwrights Project http://playwrightsproject.org/ which expands playwriting education and opportunities for youth and adults.”

With tongue in cheek, Aarons describes her research for this book series, which included sampling chocolate,  making chocolate, and hanging out in bookstores, as “such a hardship.” You can learn more about Kathy Aarons on her website at www.kathyaarons.com.

In the hot seat – interview at Authors on the Air

July 23, 2014 By Terry Leave a Comment

Con Game 231x350Tonight I’ll be in the hot seat with radio talk-show host Pam Stack of Authors on the Air. I’ve been interviewed by Pam before and it was a wide-ranging interview. What crazy subjects will we cover this time? I don’t know, but it’s sure to be lots of fun.

You can bet I’ll want to discuss “Con Game,” but also we’ll surely get into the next McKenna Mystery, “Big Island Blues.”

The interview will be at Authors on the Air at 8:00 PM EDT on July 23. I hope you can listen in!

Two days until the Tucson Festival of Books

March 13, 2014 By Terry Leave a Comment

Screen Shot 2014-03-13 at 6.30.06 AMThe Tucson Festival of Books, which is expected to draw in excess of 100,000 visitors this year, has grown into one of the largest book festivals in the country. The event, billed as “where Words and Imagination come to life,” will take place on Mar. 15 and 16 at the University of Arizona campus in Tucson, AZ. Each day, the event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Last year, this was one of my favorite events. Everyone at our booth was warm and welcoming, despite the wild weather—we had everything from snow to warm and sunny. Much like last year, a number of crime fiction authors will be grouped together. I’ll be in Booth #116, but there are plenty of us to visit if you’ll be in the area.

New York Times author interviews
Behind the story of Fear Nothing with Lisa Gardner
Behind the story of Repairman Jack with F. Paul Wilson
CJ Lyons and Broken
Phillip Margolin and Sleight of Hand

All Mystery Authors: Booth #116
Mystery Writers of America: Booth #117
Mystery We Wrote: Booth #110
Sisters in Crime, Desert Sleuths Chapter: Booth #114-115
Sisters in Crime, Tucson Chapter: Booth #113

Each of these booths will have a variety of mystery authors ranging from new voices to Edgar nominees from 2013.

Virtually every genre of books will be represented at the festival. Anyone with an interest in books or writing should attend if in the area. For more information about the Tucson Festival of Books, visit their website at TucsonFestivalofBooks.org.
