Detective Rizzoli is working a crime scene at the home of Leon Gott, a big game hunter and one of the best taxidermists in the country. The victim has been hung and gutted like a big game animal. Based on evidence at the crime scene, Dr. Isles is able to determine the victim was working on skinning and mounting the pelt of a rare snow leopard worth millions of dollars at the time of his death.
Rizzoli’s investigation takes many turns while following cold cases from Montana to Nevada to Maine. With no obvious connections to any of the cases, Rizzoli can think of only one possible motive. Could the unsolved mystery of an ill-fated safari in Botswana hold the key to solving the puzzle and catching a killer?
“Die Again” truly shines when author Tess Gerritsen writes about Botswana’s Okavango Delta and the ill-fated safari. Gerritsen’s descriptions of bush camping, the party of seven people from all over the globe, the tracker named Clarence, and bush guide Johnny Posthumus are vivid and clear. The outstanding first person voice of Millie Jacobson, combined with powerful descriptions of Africa, lets the reader experience the safari firsthand, in the camp, and riding through the bush in the jeep.
The setting is intensely realistic, enough to see the grasses blowing in the breeze while snapping pictures of lions. The vividness of the safari will have readers wondering if anyone is strong enough and smart enough to survive the nightmare.
With unexpected plot twists and turns, this Rizzoli & Isles’ thriller earns a solid five stars. “Die Again” may be the case that the indomitable Detective Jane Rizzoli won’t be able to solve. It’s that good!
