Crater Lake National Park is a natural wonder located in Oregon, which is known for its stunning blue color and pristine waters. The lake was formed around 7,700 years ago by the collapse of a volcano named Mount Mazama. This post’s jigsaw puzzle takes its inspiration from this beautiful lake.
Formation of Crater Lake National Park’s Lake
The volcanic eruption that shook Mount Mazama 7,700 years ago was so intense that it caused the summit of the mountain to collapse, forming a caldera. Over time, rainwater and snow filled the caldera, creating a lake that is not fed by natural streams or rivers..
The incredible blue color of Crater Lake helped it earn the nickname “the Jewel of the Cascades.” Its pristine waters are some of the purest in North America. In fact, the lake has been recorded as having some of the clearest water in the world. Its depth of 1,949 feet (594 meters) makes it the deepest lake in the United States.
Wildlife and Scenery Abound
Crater Lake National Park is also home to a diverse array of wildlife. In fact, various species of birds, including bald eagles, ospreys, and golden eagles, inhabit the park’s forests. During a visit to the park, visitors might also see black bears, mule deer, and coyotes. On a much smaller scale, the area is also home to a rare species of moss that grows at the bottom of the lake in oxygen-poor conditions, which scientists study to understand extreme life forms.
Did You Know?
Crater Lake has Two Islands
Wizard Island, a volcanic cinder cone, rises from the lake’s surface and is one of two islands in the lake. It’s named due to its wizard-hat shape. Phantom Ship is the second island, named for its resemblance to a ghostly ship sailing through the waters, adding to the lake’s mystique and charm.
A Lake with No Fish
Despite its stunning beauty, there are no native fish species here. No rivers or streams feed the lake, so people introduced fish between 1888 and 1941. As a result, trout and salmon are now part of its ecosystem.
Where Does the Lake Get that Intense Blue Color?
In the winter, Crater Lake receives an average of 43 feet of snow, making it one of the snowiest places in the United States. Because it receives so much snow, that white stuff often blankets the park from October to June. With nowhere else to go, the pure snowmelt fills the lake, which is responsible for its intense blue color.
Final Thoughts and Looking Ahead
Crater Lake National Park offers visitors a unique experience with its stunning views of the deep blue water and diverse wildlife. It’s a must-see destination for nature lovers and anyone looking to escape into the beauty of nature. I hope you enjoyed this virtual trip to another of America’s Amazing Places.

I missed the last question and had to go back and reread. An excellent reminder to

Took me 12:12 on the puzzle.
This is a lovely way to start the day.
Thank you.
