Old Man’s Cave at Hocking Hills State Park is located in picturesque southeastern Ohio. This area is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, rugged cliffs, and lush forests. The park covers over 2,300 acres and features a variety of geological formations, including waterfalls, deep gorges, and scenic hiking trails. Among its most famous attractions is Old Man’s Cave, a remarkable sandstone gorge with a rich history steeped in legend. Let’s look closer at the legend and its inspiration.
The Legend of Old Man’s Cave at Hocking Hills State Park
The most captivating tale associated with Old Man’s Cave revolves around Richard Roe, affectionately known as the “Old Man.” In the late 1700s, Roe embarked on a journey from his family farm in the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee. He eventually settled in the cave’s sheltered overhang. Here, he lived solitary, hunting and trapping with his loyal dogs amidst the rugged terrain.
The legend of Richard Roe takes a tragic turn with the story of his death. Roe died one winter day while attempting to break ice in the creek using his musket. The gun accidentally discharged, fatally wounding him. Local lore suggests that trappers discovered his body and buried him beneath a ledge in the cave. His remains have never been found. Still, the story endures, with campers claiming to hear the eerie baying of his dogs on moonlit nights.
Did You Know?
Glacial Erosion Created the Caves
The cave is part of a gorge carved from Black Hand Sandstone. Glacial erosion formed these caves between 14,000 and 17,000 years ago. This ancient formation contributes to the area’s allure, offering a dramatic backdrop to the legends that have been passed down through generations.
Loaded with Ecological Diversity
The park is a biodiversity hotspot, home to a variety of plant species such as hemlock, ferns, and wildflowers. It’s a haven for nature enthusiasts who appreciate the rich tapestry of flora.
Birdwatching Paradise
With its diverse habitats, the park attracts a wide array of bird species, making it a popular destination for birdwatchers. Visitors can spot everything from warblers to owls in the dense woodland areas.

I didn’t know about that legend, and I live about 3 hours from it. I just know where people are talking about when they say Old Man’s Cave! I don’t know what my time is because my timer kept going after I paused it…it got unpaused somehow!
