The holiday shopping season starts earlier every year. Unfortunately, the season of peace and love also brings plenty of opportunities for scammers to take advantage of unsuspecting consumers. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) posted a list of ten holiday shopping tips on November 20. I’ve pared down the list to my five favorites. Unless otherwise noted, the links in my Five Best Holiday Shopping Tips go to more detail on the FTC website.
Five best holiday shopping tips
1) Do you use a shopping app? Do you know what information your app collects about you? Some shopping apps collect things like your name, address, phone number, email, and Social Security number. Look for apps that tell you what they do with your data, and how they keep it secure.
2) Winning the latest tech gadget or a “free” gift card in a contest is tempting, but be wary when entering contests. Contests are typically used to build a mailing list, so know that when you enter, you’re usually authorizing the person or company to add you to their email list. Also, remember that sometimes your personal information might be sold or used to commit identity theft.
3) Shopping online is a lot like going to a physical store. It’s always a good idea to keep copies of a receipt or order number. If you’re dealing with a retailer you haven’t used before, consider keeping copies of their refund and return policies, shipping costs, and warranties in case there’s a problem.
4) ‘Tis the season to be…wary? Yes, indeed, especially of charities that don’t provide key information in writing. Check out my Tips to pick a good charity for giving post for a way to see whether a charity you’re considering is a good choice.
5) Check out product warranties. What used to come as a manufacturer’s promise that they stood behind their product has turned into a massive revenue generator with the use of “extended warranties.” Sometimes, an extended warranty makes sense. However, when making a purchase and considering an extended warranty, read the details about what’s covered. Not all extended warranties are equal, and it pays to see what you get for your money.
That wraps up my five best holiday shopping tips list. I hope you find them helpful and stay safe this holiday season!
