Hugo Marston’s close friend Bart Denum asks for help in finding his missing nineteen-year-old daughter. Bart is concerned because he’s been unable to contact Amy for several days. When Hugo makes inquiries in Paris he finds that Amy has left with a stranger she recently met and is most likely in Barcelona, Spain. Hugo takes some long overdue vacation time and, along with his friend, former CIA agent Tom Green, heads to Barcelona to locate Amy.
Upon their arrival in Barcelona, Hugo and Tom break into a business looking for information on the stranger that was last seen with Amy. This action brings them to a meeting with Chief Inspector Garcia, with whom they agree to cooperate in exchange for not being charged with breaking and entering. The meeting gives Hugo the information he needs to find the stranger Amy left Paris with, Ruben Castaneda. Hugo and Tom find Castaneda’s apartment and enter only to discover a gruesome scene. Castaneda is lying on the bathroom floor naked, in a pool of blood. Before they are able to leave and call Inspector Garcia, they come across Bart Denum in the apartment . . . who is covered in blood.
With Bart in jail, arrested for murder, Hugo’s investigation becomes more complicated. He attempts to narrow down a list of suspects by taking desperate measures. Hugo is fighting on two fronts, to prove Bart’s innocence by finding the real killer and to find Amy before she disappears . . . forever.
The Reluctant Matador is the fifth novel in the Hugo Marston series. It explores the darker side of life with a complex plot that is well-written. The characters are both intricate and entertaining while the descriptions of Spain are excellent. Mark Pryor continues to captivate readers with Hugo Marston’s adventures.
