When you visit O‘ahu, you quickly realize there’s no shortage of things to do. From the iconic beaches of Waikīkī to the rich cultural history embedded in every corner of the island, the possibilities seem endless. But amid the hiking trails, luaus, and sea turtle sightings, there’s one experience that completely stole my heart—a visit to the Foster Botanical Garden and its enchanting orchid collection.

During our stay on the island, we planned on sightseeing via the hop-on, hop-off bus. It was at one of the stops that we discoved the tranquil side of O‘ahu at the Foster Botanical Garden. The gardens are a serene green haven in the heart of Honolulu’s hustle and bustle. Among its many treasures, the orchids stood out like a collection of colorful jewels, each bloom bursting with personality.
Awed by Orchids
When I stepped into the orchid greenhouse, I was immediately captivated. There I was, my camera in hand and surrounded by dramatic purples, delicate whites, fiery oranges, and buttery yellows—all swirling together in intricate patterns. Orchids are masterpieces that nature perfected with unparalleled artistry, and seeing so many in one place left me wondering where to begin. Each flower seemed to have its own story, its own flair.
So, what were those stories? How did they arrive in Hawai‘i? Why are they so cherished nearly everywhere, but especially here? How have they been cared for over the years?
About this week’s puzzle
This week’s puzzle was inspired by the orchids at Foster Botanical Garden.

Orchids in Hawaiian Culture
Though orchids are not native to Hawai‘i, they’ve been woven into the fabric of its culture over time. The Dendrobium orchid, in particular, has become an integral part of Hawaiian hospitality, often used in leis to symbolize love, appreciation, and welcome. Orchids are also a popular feature in gardens and floral arrangements across the islands, prized for their variety and stunning beauty.
Their allure isn’t just cultural—it’s universal. Hawai‘i, with its tropical climate, is the perfect setting for these delicate plants. Despite being imported to the islands, orchids have flourished here under expert care and an ideal environment.
The Science Behind the Magic
There’s more to orchids than their beauty. Scientifically, they are among the most diverse and specialized plants in the world. With over 25,000 species globally, they’ve adapted in fascinating ways to attract specific pollinators like bees, butterflies, and even moths. Some orchids mimic the appearance of other plants, while others emit unique fragrances as part of their survival strategy.
Walking through its collection, you can’t help but be impressed by the evolutionary brilliance of these plants. What other plant has managed to thrive in so many environments and captivate so many hearts?
Final Thoughts and Looking Ahead
For us, trips to Hawaii used to be an annual event, but Covid changed that. One of these days, we’ll make it back. I’m hoping that trip will include a visit to the Foster Botanical Garden. Beyond the orchids, the gardens offer an incredible variety of tropical plants, extinct species, and century-old trees that make you feel like you’ve stepped into another world. Somehow, the orchids are calling, beckoning me to return.
Next week, we’ll be visiting the tiny town of Idyllwild in Southern California. In fact, we’ll be arriving there today. With any luck, we might even meet Mayor Max—the golden retriever who is the town’s honorary mayor. Oh yeah, have I got a story for you!
