In last week’s Friday Foto, The geysers at Whakarewarewa, I showed a close-up view of the geysers. This photo steps back and shows the lush grounds surrounding the geysers. This area is actually a living Maori village where visitors can see Maori cultural exhibits, including an entertaining show, purchase art made by local artists, and see the geysers up close.
I admire what’s being done here to educate visitors and preserve and protect the Maori culture. Facilities are all excellent, the walking paths are well-maintained, and there is a tremendous amount to see and do here. The one thing this is not, however, is a rustic adventure. This village has all the comforts of home, right down to the air conditioned cafeteria where the “feast” is held.
