The geysers at Whakarewarewa in Rotorura are some of the last remaining geothermal geysers remaining in New Zealand. During the 19th Century, there were more than 200 active geysers. Today, there are less than sixty.
In Rotorura, the sulfur odor from the geysers permeates everything. At the geysers themselves, walking the grounds can take you in and out of steam clouds, which reek of hydrogen sulfide. It’s a very odoriferous place!
