At the Kilauea Lighthouse Point Wildlife Refuge, there’s a small island. Its name is Moku‘ae‘ae Island. According to Kauai Vacation Secrets, the island is five acres. The fact that it’s five acres surprises me because when you’re looking at the island from the promontory, it looks small—really small.
There are no permanent residents—other than about twenty species of birds. However, the island does see human visitors. But, only the intrepid kind. The last time we visited, a couple had landed their kayaks and were doing a little exploring. Between the rocky shore and the ocean currents, this looks like a dangerous place to land. The other problem is, once you get there, what do you do? How many endangered birds will you disturb? And, of course, then you’ve got to launch off the rocks.
