Photos are from the summit of Haleakala, the dormant volcano on Maui that is home to Haleakala National Park. At 10,000 feet elevation, and 2,500 miles from the nearest large land mass, the peak is home to several observatories because of the clear air and dark skies. It’s a major tourist destination, but is also an important cultural location to Hawaiians. The name Haleakala means “House of the Sun”.
