Aloha, McKenna here. On Kauai, there’s a spot at the southern end of Lydgate Park where people have erected a series of shelters made of driftwood, downed trees, and local plant material. Some of the structures are obviously in memory of loved ones. Some of the others? Who knows. This particular structure might be classified as a beachfront penthouse compared to some of the others.
The structure in the photo consists of a frame made of long-dead tree branches and a roof thatched with local plants. On the morning before this photo was taken—a bright, sunny day, by the way—Kathy commented that she should take Terry’s picture in front of the lean-to. The camera was in the condo that morning, so Terry got a reprieve.
Later in the day, Terry decided that the picture was a good idea—as long as he could have a sign. Hence was born The Wiki-Wacky Book Store. To my knowledge, it’s the world’s only open-air, beachfront bookstore. Certainly, the only one of this caliber. As you can see, there’s plenty of room for stock—not a lot of traffic here so inventory shouldn’t be a big issue. It’s open air—so the store will take advantage of Kauai’s fabulous weather.
The store does have a few “logistical” hurdles though. That roof, for instance. It needs a little more substance before it will hold off any amount of rain. There’s no power, so running a cash register would be a challenge. And since Photo Finish is only available as an e-book—and we’d obviously want to carry those—we’d have to work on the whole internet connection thing.
And then there’s signage. Terry’s going to have to do a whole lot better than that pathetic “Buy My Book” on the back of a manilla envelope. I’m thinking neon…flashing lights…lots of color. You know, something befitting of a “business” this…unique. So, authors, if you don’t mind a little sand in your shorts and need a place to beg people to “buy my book” stop on by. And bring your own sign, Terry’s ink ran in the rain.

This is a one of your best posts and I would definitely visit this bookstore. Are you going to have a coffee bar as well? Or just serve those drinks with the little umbrellas?

Aloha, Vicky, McKenna here. I’m liking the idea of the coffee bar, but power’s still an issue. I think we should file for the permit and see if we can run a little orange extension cord out to the beach. Of course, the umbrella drinks are kind of a no-brainer as long as we can get a liquor license. Guess I’d better add that to the business plan…mahalo for the suggestions!

I hate the share button. It’s kind of creepy the way it goes up and down.
It’s also odd to read about you in the third person.
Griping done. I’ll post this on Facebook.

Hi Marilynne, while it’s odd to read about me in third person, it’s really weird writing that way. I feel like I’ve got one of those personality disorders that the police use to catch the bad guys. Oh wait, I think I hear someone at the door…
