Friday Fotos – on the docks in Russell, New Zealand

January 22, 2021 By Terry Leave a Comment

Welcome to Russell
From the docks to the town, Russell was an amazing little place. We loved it and found great gelato!

This photo was taken on the docks in Russell, New Zealand as we departed the MS Noordam for our day trip in town. There’s always a lot of hype about the ports of call prior to and during a cruise, but Russell lived up to the advance information in every way. It’s a lovely little town, and that begins right when you disembark. We had a great time touring Russell and only wished we had several days to stay. Alas, our trip was short and fast, but delightful nonetheless.

Friday Fotos – plenty of places to grab a bite in Russell

September 25, 2020 By Terry Leave a Comment

Plenty of places to sit and have some tea in Russell New Zealand
Outdoor tables are common and the atmosphere is relaxing

We fell in love with Russell, New Zealand. It’s a lovely little town with plenty of quaint shops, many of which cater to tourists. The eateries along the water are wonderful, and the atmosphere (when the weather is good) is delightful.

As a side note, this was my first—and last—day in a ‘healthy’ condition after contracting the Australian flu during our Sydney stopover. As far as our trip went, my timing for getting seriously ill was pretty good. Yes, first and last. We made this excursion, and I promptly developed a lung infection. During my time with the Australian flu, I truly felt as though I might die from the severe coughing. It’s an experience I never want to repeat!

Welcome to Arrowtown, New Zealand

One of our stops on our land tour of New Zealand was in Arrowtown. This quaint little tourist trap has charisma galore!

St. Andrews Church in Geraldine, New Zealand

Our morning coffee stop in Geraldine was a block away from this church. So much character in those old walls!

The Woolstore Complex in Omaru New Zealand

Omaru has so much fantastic architecture. Many of these buildings use Omaru stone, which was taken from quarries neaby.

Devonport in New Zealand along the shore

We walked through a park in Devonport to a point where we could see another part of the island across the water.

Downtown Devonport New Zealand

Downtown Devonport has some beautiful old architecture, but plenty of cars!

Wellington from our balcony

We're back in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand

Near Taurangi New Zealand

Another picturesque country setting near Taurangi, which is located in about the middle of North Island.

Travel Journal – April 27 – Russell, New Zealand

April 27, 2019 By Terry Leave a Comment

It’s been a rough week. Nine days ago on (our Thursday) I came down with the flu. Kathy talked me into going to the medical center, and they told me I had a 100.4 temp and was quarantined to our room. Sunday morning, the temperature had been gone for twenty-four hours, so I was released from quarantine. That was the morning we arrived in Sydney and had to leave the ship for at least two hours. We sat in a bar over by the Opera House where we could watch the ship and passed the time drinking water and green tea. To make a long story short, the flu went into some respiratory condition, my temp went back up, and I wound up back in medical. No quarantine this time, but I’m finally feeling better and had my first full day today. As a result, I’m doing a little catch-up and putting up the photos from Russell, New Zealand, which is where we were the day our tour itinerary went topsy turvy.

This was an early morning shore excursion, so we had to be up bright and early!

Strings first, then glue

Once glue had been applied to the binding, the pages set

Printed pages ready for binding

The pages were bound together with string.

Shims help to position the text on the page

The shims come in all sizes to make for precise placement.

Materials to leather bind books

The books made in this bindery were all leather covered. This is getting close to the final product.

This old press was used to make a single proof after the letters had been set. After the proof, the actual printing was done downstairs

Just beyond the anchored sailboats is the MS Noordam waiting for all of us to see the sights.

I hear the scones were fabulous—but they were not gluten-free, so not for me!

Established in 1836, this is the oldest church in New Zealand, and it's still beautiful inside.

Downtown Russell

Russell is a quaint town without a lot of traffic—except for the pedestrian kind.
