Reflecting pools at Hawaii State Capitol
Of course, if there’s water and it’s moving, I’m hooked. I must have snapped a dozen photos in this spot, experimenting with different settings on my camera. In the end, I chose this one to share. It’s hard to believe Hawaii’s Capitol is now more than fifty years old! The reflecting pools around the capitol are intended to symbolize the Pacific Ocean surrounding Hawaii. The reflecting pools create a striking and relaxing ambience that made us simply want to sit and soak it up.
According to Wikipedia, the pools have had a persistent algae growth problem since the completion of the capitol building in 1969. It’s hard to believe that the state has been struggling with this issue for more than fifty years. There are some that say while the pools symbolize the ocean surrounding the islands, the algae symbolizes the solution in the ocean. If only the pollution in the ocean could be kept under control as easily as the algae in the pools!
