We were supposed to be spending a couple of days in the little town of Idyllwild, where we hoped to meet Max, the Idyllwild Mayor. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other ideas. A few days before our trip was to begin, I checked the weather and got a shock—temps in Idyllwild were to be in the mid 90s. For a couple of wimps from the coast, that was too much. We changed our plans pronto!
But that’s not stopping me from doing this post because Idyllwild still sounds very cool. It’s tucked away in the pine-covered mountains of Southern California, has an artistic spirit, a dog-friendly vibe, and one of the quirkiest leadership traditions you’ll ever encounter. Forget politics and campaign trails—you see, in Idyllwild, the mayor doesn’t have a platform (unless it’s attached to the back of a pickup truck). Instead, this small mountain town has entrusted its honorary mayoral duties to a golden retriever named Max. And yes, this isn’t a tall tale—it’s as real as the wagging tails and warm smiles the Idyllwild mayor, Max, brings wherever he goes.
How Did a Dog Become Mayor?
Long story short, it’s democracy at its finest—just with more fur. Back in 2012, Idyllwild decided to hold a fundraiser for local animal rescue organizations. The town doesn’t have an official government structure, so residents thought, “Why not hold a fun election and make someone honorary mayor? And while we’re at it, why not make it… a dog?”
Instead of candidates giving traditional stump speeches, locals nominated their pets. The votes? They came in the form of donations, with proceeds going to help animal welfare. Enter Max (well, technically Max I), a golden retriever who charmed voters enough to secure the title of Idyllwild’s first canine mayor. Over time, the honor has been passed down to other golden retrievers from his “family.” Today, Mayor Max II continues the tradition, along with his deputies, Mikey and Mitzi, making them possibly the cutest government officials in history.
About this week’s puzzle
This week’s puzzle was inspired by the beautiful scenery near Idyllwild, CA.

Idyllwild Mayor Max has “Paw-triotic” Duties
Unlike human politicians, Mayor Max never delivers long speeches or makes empty promises. His platform? Spreading joy, one wag at a time. That’s not to say he doesn’t take his responsibilities seriously. You’ll often spot him patrolling the streets of Idyllwild from the back of a decorated pickup truck, complete with an American flag and mayoral banners. His job is simple but heartfelt—he meets with locals, poses for photos with tourists, and lends his star power to community events.
One thing’s for sure, you’ll never hear any complaints about this mayor’s approval rating. People love him, dogs adore him, and his upbeat personality is as constant as the California sun. On top of that, I’m bummed that we didn’t get the chance to meet him!
The Canine Who Brought a Town Together
What makes Idyllwild’s mayoral tradition so captivating isn’t just the cuteness factor—it’s the way Mayor Max serves as a reminder of what small-town charm is all about. In a world often focused on big city hustle, Idyllwild stands out as a slice of simplicity. Their mayor isn’t concerned with power or politics; he’s there to bring smiles and showcase the best of their community.
Max and his team also help create connections. Visitors from around the globe come to meet him, intrigued by the idea of a dog in office. His appearances at local festivities bring people together, whether it’s for a photo op or just a kind word (or bark!).
A Tradition Worth Barking About
Of course, under Max’s leadership, “ruff” days are a rarity. His reign symbolizes more than just quirky humor—it’s about the love people have for animals and the inclusive spirit of the Idyllwild community. But even if you never make it to Idyllwild in person, it’s fun to know there’s a real place where a dog isn’t just man’s best friend but also a community leader.
Final Thoughts and Looking Ahead
At the heart of this tale is a simple lesson about joy, connection, and finding happiness in the unexpected. Whether you’re reading about charming small towns or creating fictional ones for your favorite cozy mysteries, Idyllwild Mayor Max is proof that you don’t always need a serious face in leadership. Sometimes, a wagging tail and a heart full of love are more than enough to keep a community smiling.
As Max would probably say (if he could talk): “Pawsitive vibes only.”
