Welcome to the next stop on our cross-country tour of amazing places. This week, we’re visitng the heart of Arizona, the Grand Canyon in all its grandeur. A visit here is like taking a journey through Earth’s history, with each sedimentary layer telling a tale of its past. I visited once, but it was a hazy day, and the colors were muted, nothing like what you’re seeing in this week’s jigsaw puzzle. Let’s explore this magnificent geological wonder while you have fun with another gorgeous puzzle!

The Grand Canyon in all its grandeur
The Grand Canyon and its grandeur are not just a stunning sight but a treasure trove of geological wonders. Formed by the Colorado River’s relentless flow over millions of years, the canyon reveals distinct layers of rock formations. Starting at the top with the ancient Kaibab Limestone, we then descend into the depths to find the remarkable Vishnu Schist, which dates back a staggering 2 billion years. This captivating rock formation is a feast for the eyes and a source of fascination for geologists worldwide.
Geological processes behind the formation
The Grand Canyon’s cliffs formed through a mix of geological processes that took place over millions of years. The first major process was the deposition of the horizontal sediment layers we see today.
Around 70 million years ago, the Colorado Plateau uplifted due to tectonic activity. This created the highlands and started the erosive power of the Colorado River. The river began carving through the uplifted rock layers, forming the Grand Canyon as we know it today.
Over time, the Colorado River eroded the plateau’s rock layers, creating stunning cliffs and exposing the canyon’s colorful layers. Each layer represents a different era in Earth’s history, offering a glimpse into the past.
A sunrise and sunset spectacle
The best colors are visible at sunrise and sunset when the sun’s rays illuminate the red and orange sandstone, creating a sight to behold. While I’ve never seen the Grand Canyon’s grandeur at that time of day, those who have say the sight of the steep-sided cliffs painted with hues of red, orange, and pink against the azure sky is a spectacle that will leave you spellbound.
Which brings me to this week’s jigsaw puzzle. As you put together each piece, I hope you’ll marvel at what it took for nature to provide us with such an incredible spectacle. After all, this isn’t just a spectacle for the eyes, it’s a testament to the immense power of time and nature and how they can carve carving miracles out of stone.
