For the past few weeks, I’ve been giving you a virtual tour of the small island paradise called Pago Pago. This week, let’s look at Samoan art in this Samoan art jigsaw puzzle. Let’s take a tour of Pago Pago and its vibrant and unique art scene that reflects the rich local culture, history, and influence of neighboring Polynesian islands.

Photo of the week — Pago Pago and art
Tapa cloth
Tapa cloth, also known as siapo, is a special kind of art from Pago Pago. The Samoan women pound the inner bark of the mulberry tree with a mallet, then soak and beat the fibers to make a soft, see-through cloth. They make beautiful designs on the cloth by using stencils, painting, and rubbing. Tapa cloth used to be worn as clothes, used as bed covers, and for special ceremonies. Now, it’s a popular souvenir for people visiting Pago Pago.
Wood carving
In Pago Pago, wood carving is a special kind of art. Artists make statues and figures out of wood. Islanders use these wooden figures to decorate homes and also in special events. The figures look like gods or ancestors and have cool tattoos and designs on them. The wood carvers in Pago Pago also make bowls, plates, and boxes that people can buy as souvenirs at the markets.
Tattoos
One of the most striking forms of Pago Pago’s art is its tattooing tradition, which dates back centuries. Samoan tattoo artists, or tufuga ta tatau, use a traditional tool called an ‘au to create intricate designs on their clients’ bodies. Samoan tattoos are not just decorative; they hold deep cultural and spiritual significance, and they’re often used to mark important life events, such as weddings and funerals. The art of Samoan tattooing has experienced a revival in recent years, thanks to the efforts of local tattoo artists, who are preserving the tradition while expanding its reach.
Music and dance
Pago Pago’s art extends to its music and dance, integral to the local culture. Samoan music features singing and percussion, while Samoan dance showcases graceful, flowing movements. Pago Pago’s dance culture has also been influenced by the traditional Hawaiian hula. Experience the island’s music and dance at cultural events like the annual Teuila Festival.
Pago Pago’s art scene is an essential part of the island’s unique culture and history. Tapa cloth, wood carving, tattooing, and music and dance are just a few examples of the different forms of art that you can discover in Pago Pago. Whether you’re a lover of art or want to experience the island’s rich heritage, there’s something for everyone in Pago Pago’s vibrant art scene. So if you ever find yourself on this small Pacific island, don’t miss out on the opportunity to explore its fascinating art and culture.
