History of the Pago Pago coral reefs

The coral reefs of Pago Pago, American Samoa, have a rich and diverse history, with remarkable resilience and adaptability. According to the National Park Service, the park waters are home to fringing coral reefs that exhibit a strong Samoan cultural component. The reefs typically feature a reef flat or shallow backreef moat, contributing to an intricate ecosystem that supports a variety of marine life. Over time, they have faced various challenges, including the grounding of nine fishing vessels in Pago Pago Harbor on Tutuila Island, causing significant damage. However, ongoing efforts for recovery and improvements have shown promising results, although full restoration may take time.

Trouble on the horizon

In 1995, a survey found that approximately 95% of the reefs in the inner Pago Pago Harbor, including Aua, had been severely degraded³. Despite these challenges, the reefs of American Samoa remain a beacon of hope. Home to roughly 2,700 known marine species, the reef is an immensely diverse and important ecosystem. Some of its waters are even home to two of the world’s oldest and largest coral colonies on record.

The future needs a little help

However, the future of these resilient Pago Pago coral reefs is threatened by global warming. Rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification, and increased storm intensity – all effects of climate change – could severely impact these fragile ecosystems. The Environmental Impact on a Samoan Coral Reef report indicates that the large deep-water Pago Pago Harbor, which contains a fifth of the reef front, is particularly vulnerable. As global warming continues unchecked, it will be crucial to implement effective conservation strategies to protect and preserve the stunning beauty and biodiversity of the Pago Pago coral reefs.
