Coastal views at Cabrillo National Monument
Everything about Cabrillo National Monument lives up to the old business mantra of ‘dress to impress.’ This week, the show goes on with the amazing Cabrillo coastal views. Wherever you look at this park, there’s a view. Like ocean? Got it. Coastal city? Done. Ships and boats? No problem at all.
On our first trip to the park, we went to the Visitor Center and the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. Because we visited at the wrong time of day (high tide), we decided to return during a low tide. I checked the tide tables and scheduled a return trip during a -.7 foot tide. Score! You can see the photos from the tide pools here.
The tide pools, however, were just the beginning. Following the trail from the parking lot, leads to a station where there’s a tide pool demonstration for the kids (both young and old!). From there, it was down to the coast. The rocky shore is incredible. I had two favorite spots from what little we saw—the wrecked boat and the natural arch.
One thing I can say for sure, I wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere near that boat when it landed on shore. The other thing is that it may not last long, given that it will take the brunt of any high tides coming in. It will be interesting to see if it’s still around the next time we visit.
