Views on the way up Diamond Head
Although it was just two years ago, it now feels like a lifetime since when we made this trip up Diamond Head. Social distancing was an unknown concept at the time. Today, the trip up would be very different, if we would even go. The views on the way up Diamond Head would be the same, but the thought of trudging up that trail two feet behind a stranger for any length of time is, to me, unthinkable.
For now, I’ll relive the trip through these photos, hoping you enjoy them as much as I enjoy bringing them to you. We’d taken a Hop-On/Hop-Off tour bus out to the trailhead. As a result, we got a much later start than we’d have liked. In retrospect, we should have gotten a ride so we could get an early start. At least two years ago, the trail got very busy (you can see the line of ants in some of the photos).
All those people couldn’t change the magnificent views as we got closer to the top. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it all the way. I was recovering from the Australian flu, followed closely by pneumonia. Sadly, we missed the control station that was built in 1911 and the 1917 lighthouse. Maybe someday we’ll make it back and I’ll have more photos and views to remember from Diamond Head.

This is just the first set of steps. After these,, there are at least two more sets. This is where the tough get going and the rest of us watch.
The trail to the top is one swithback after another.
Even from here the views go on to other islands - look closely at the blue horizon (left side) and you'll see the outline of Maui
The higher you go, the better the views.
Between the full parking lot at the trailhead, the number of people milling around, and the line at the top, it's obvious the urge to conquer Diamond Head is huge.
From the beginning of the trail things don't look that bad.
