I just love a cute Japanese stone lantern
There’s something about a Japanese stone lantern that really intrigues me. The first one I remember seeing was in Spokane, WA. We went to a garden where we walked the winding paths and admired the incredible landscaping. Japanese gardens were not common in those days (we’re talking early 80s), so that trip really registered with me.
When we were at Foster Botanic Garden, I was so happy to see a strong Japanese influence. And, of course, my inner photographer was screaming at me to get this picture. By the way, did you know these lanterns were originally used as votive lights? According to JapanVisitor.com, these lanterns didn’t originate in Japan, but were first created in Korea and made their way to Japan via China during the 6th Century. The light in the lamp represented the teachings of the Buddha and was helpful in overcoming the darkness of ignorance. Maybe what we need right now is to light a whole bunch of these lanterns!
