Wow! What a day. We started out going into Milford Sound at 6 AM. It seemed strange going in so early—after all, it wasn’t even light yet. However, the cliffs lining the sides of the fjord were hazy ghost images that held a great deal of drama. The further into the sound we traveled, the lighter it became and soon those cliffs had definite outlines. At one point, I saw rain just beginning to fall—it was like a hazy curtain being lowered slowly onto the sea. I tried to capture in with my camera, but am sure the picture will never do justice to the sight. We’re now on our way to Doubtful Sound.
It’s 2:45 PM and we’re just heading into Dusky Sound. There are some amazing waterfalls here—almost as impressive as Milford Sound. The day is typical for here at this time of year, lots of clouds, some rain, and chilly. It is, however, not as cold as we’d anticipated and, as the Irish say, it’s ‘fresh.’ There are lots of ferns, beech trees, and fuscia!
