40th Anniversary Trip – Auckland to Honolulu

View of Honolulu from Outrigger Hotel — This was the view from our balcony at the Outrigger Hotel in downtown Honolulu. A stunning day and a glorious view. What a way to start a long trip!

Here’s a recap of our 40th Anniversary trip. It’s an anniversary travel journal of sorts. We hadn’t expected to keep an anniversary travel journal when we started, but it grew into one as the trip progressed.

The trip began in Honolulu. We then flew to Auckland and began a 12-day land tour. The tour began in Auckland and headed south, but on 27 Mar, the fifth day of our tour (depending upon when you start counting) we received news that record rainfall on the west side of New Zealand was going to cause a major change of plans. Bridges and roads had been washed out and would take weeks to open safely. We were very disappointed that we didn’t get to take the TranzAlpine train ride we’d booked, but delighted we weren’t stranded in a local gymnasium like many others in the affected area.
