Lapahoehoe on the Big Island beckons

During our trip to Lapahoehoe on the Big Island I wandered to the south side of the park. This gorgeous bay, with its blue waters, white surf, and green hills seemed so idyllic. With all this serenity, it’s hard to believe this is the site of a tsunami that took the lives of school children and their teachers.
If you get a chance to visit the Big Island, Lapahoehoe is located an hour or so north of Hilo on the eastern side of the island. It’s a wonderful place to visit. I’d recommend bringing a picnic lunch (we didn’t have one with us!) so you can truly enjoy the atmosphere.

This photo was taken at Carlsbad's Bataquitos Lagoon. In the 80s, this lagoon nearly died because the freeway and railroad had closed down the inlets leading from the ocean to the lagoon. The lagoon has been healthier in recent years, but it will improve more when the inlets are opened by future expansion of the I-5 Interstate.
Ageless beauty...these old stumps caught my attention.
