During our last visit to Honolulu, we kept seeing this building from our condo. The architecture intrigued me and so we went to find it. It’s St Augustine by the Sea Roman Catholic Church I had to get a few photos. This gorgeous building turns out to have come from very humble beginnings. The parish was founded in 1854. According to the staugustinebythesea.com, “…it was the third parish church established in the fledgling Hawaii Catholic Church, which was beginning to grow after a period of persecution in the 1830s.”
As it turns out, the first parish church was a temporary chapel constructed of coconut fronds and timber that had washed ashore. Fast forward one hundred and sixty years and wow, St Augustine by the Sea church is quite an eye catcher!

Hi Julie, isn’t it gorgeous? I’d seen in from a distance on previous visits, but wanted to get up close this time. I’m so glad I did!
