Juliet Townsend is working a dead-end job at the Mid-Night Inn, a one star hotel, located just outside the small town of Midway, Indiana. She often reflects on her life and her track team races at Midway High School, wondering how it all went so wrong. Juliet has lost hope of ever getting her life back on track until Maddy Bell, her best friend from Midway High, walks into the office one night.
Juliet hasn’t seen Maddy since graduation ten years earlier and Juliet still harbors her old jealousy and distrust of Maddy. The morning after Maddy returns, Juliet wakes up feeling guilty over their conversation. She wonders how she can make things right with her best friend. For the first time in ten years she feels better about herself and maybe even hopeful for her future. When Juliet arrives at the Mid-Night for her shift, she looks for Maddy to talk things out, only to discover that Maddy has been murdered.
As Juliet realizes she’s become the chief suspect in Maddy’s murder, she sets out to find other suspects. Her investigation forces her to relive her high school years with Maddy and face the facts she could never face before. As she becomes increasingly desperate, Juliet puts her own life in danger to find the killer.
