Today is release day for the Apple iPhone 5. Millions of people are waiting for their shipping notifications from UPS that will announce the shipment of their new phone. However, it’s also a day when those same people may be vulnerable to a new email scam. Unlike the Nigerian 419 scam, which works “offline,” this email is designed to steal banking and personal information just by clicking on a link.
On September 19, the Websense Security Labs blog listed an entry for a new UPS email scam. The new email scam, merely a twist on previous UPS email scams, supposedly informs you that you may get shipping information on your new phone by clicking a link. The link goes to a .ru website, where a banking trojan virus will be loaded onto your computer.
If you receive such an email, be extremely cautious and go directly to the UPS website, where you can enter your tracking number to see whether your phone has shipped.
And, by the way, if you didn’t preorder your phone, you’re going to need to wait in line and hope for the best. This is a hot release and will go quickly. Just don’t be caught by scammers who want to steal your information and your money.

Personally, I think it’s a scam and I would notify my credit card company about the transaction. They’ll probably tell you to dispute it in writing, but now that the people you paid have what they need, what’s to stop them from charging more stuff? You may also be told by the credit card company that they’ll be issuing you a new card, but that’s better than having your info being sold to the highest bidder.

I received notification that I won a free iPhone 6 and I just had to pay shipping and handling. I receive notification back from prize Bay penny auction saying that they will be shipping it out next week and when they do they will send me a tracking number. well the initial charge for shipping and handling is $6.99 they charged me 7 dollars and something, not a big deal until today I look at my checking account and they have done another charge that is pending of $49.49.the transaction is under Asi Yunnan:800 919 9202. I tried to call customer service and they told me that they would need my full name iris I didn’t feel comfortable giving it to them and they told me that they have many clients so there’s no way that they know who I am or what company I won the prize from. did I just get scammed? I need to know asap I’m almost afraid to even add my information to give it to you you might be one of them lol

Hi Katrina, sorry this took so long. Things have been pretty crazy here lately. In any case, this sounds like an out-and-out scam in which you’ll be charged monthly for the access to use the phone. You should dispute all of those charges with your credit card company and tell them what you told me in your comment. Since you may actually have some losses on this, you should consider reporting this to the FBI through the Internet Crime Complain Center (IC3) at http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx or by contacting your local FBI office. Good luck. You’re going to want to get this stopped as soon as possible.
