More crashing waves on the Big Island at Laupahoehoe

Crashing waves at Laupahoehoe on the Big Island

Crashing waves at LaupahoehoeWhen we visited Laupahoehoe on the advice of a friend, we had no idea it was going to be such a wonderful place. The park has a huge expanse of grass where kids can play and just beyond that are these incredible views of the ocean waves crashing. There were a few intrepid souls snorkeling off the boat dock. They weren't saying much about what … [Read more...] about More crashing waves on the Big Island at Laupahoehoe

Friday Fotos — a visit to O‘ahu’s Sandy Beach

A beautiful day at Oahu's Sandy Beach

On our last visit to O‘ahu, we took one day out to drive to various scenic spots on the island. One of our stops was at Sandy Beach, which saw calm surf and light crowds this particular day. In the background, you can see the Halona Blowhole, which was somewhat of a disappointment to us because we were at both places during low tide. Ah well, you can't have … [Read more...] about Friday Fotos — a visit to O‘ahu’s Sandy Beach

Surf's up at Laupahoehoe on the Big Island's east side.

Just before our trip to Hawai‘i, a friend suggested we visit Laupahoehoe on the Big Island. The little town is on the northeast side of the island, miles from much of anything other than lava rock and gorgeous views. The interesting thing about Laupahoehoe is that it is the site of the April Fool's Day tsunami in 1946. The tsunami claimed the lives of twenty-four people in this … [Read more...] about Friday Fotos — a rocky little beach called Laupahoehoe

Iolani Palace

For the most part, all I can say about ‘Iolani Palace is wow. We recently took our first tour of the palace and were amazed at the grandeur and history. The palace was the official residence of Hawai‘i's monarchy. In 1891, Queen Lili‘uokalani ascended to the throne after King Kalākaua died. Shortly thereafter, she attempted to change the Hawaiian constitution, but a coup driven … [Read more...] about Friday Fotos — inside Iolani Palace – what an amazing place

Friday Fotos — a beautiful day at Polihale Beach

Polihale Beach on Kaua‘i - wow

If you travel to the westernmost end of Kaua‘i, you'll find Polihale Beach, which is adjacent to a forest reserve, a state park, and the incomparable Na Pali Coast. This is not a beach where you'll find a lot of people. But, it is a place where the water is warm and the sand nice and soft. This photo was taken by my cousin Sharon on her trip to Kaua‘i, her first trip ever. Now … [Read more...] about Friday Fotos — a beautiful day at Polihale Beach
