Have you ever heard whispers of an ancient, advanced civilization living beneath a mountain? During our recent visit to Mount Shasta, Kathy‘s cousin told us about an ancient civilization living beneath the mountain. Okay, I admit it, he had me at ancient, advanced civilization. But, living inside a mountain? I just had to learn more about this wild story.

The Lemurian Legend Begins
The Lemurian legend began in 1894 when Frederick Spencer Oliver finished writing “A Dweller on Two Planets.” Oliver claimed the story was channeled through him by a spirit named Phylos the Thibetan. The story was about survivors who established a sanctuary within Mount Shasta after their continent sank beneath the Pacific Ocean. Oliver’s tale wasn’t published until several years after his death. However, the story took hold and lives on to this day.
According to the legend, the Lemurians were an advanced civilization that existed in the Pacific Ocean thousands of years ago. Their story weaves together elements of mysticism, lost technology, and spiritual enlightenment that continue to draw curious minds to the mountain’s slopes.
The Mysterious Disappearance of Dr. Brown
Perhaps one of the most curious chapters in Mount Shasta’s Lemurian saga involves British mining engineer J.C. Brown. In 1934, Brown assembled an expedition to explore a mysterious door that he’d discovered 30 years earlier. The door led to an 11-mile-long tunnel, and in the cave he’d found skeletons, gold, and more. However, in a twist that seems pulled from fiction, Brown vanished without a trace the day before the expedition was scheduled to begin.
Final Thoughts
It was the Lemurian lore that provided the most unexpected twist during our visit to Mount Shasta. I suppose I shouldn’t have been surprised. I’d already seen a store dedicated to singing bowls, an apothecary, and. a natural food store that rivaled anything we have in San Diego. Whether you arrive as a skeptic or a believer, there’s something undeniably magnetic about a place where the extraordinary is discussed with such comfortable familiarity. Perhaps Mount Shasta’s true magic lies not in whether Lemurians actually exist, but in how this legend has shaped a community that embraces both the mysterious and the mundane with equal hospitality.
