Did someone say lighthouse? I know, a whole bunch of ears just perked up. Who doesn’t love a lighthouse? Especially one that was once considered an engineering marvel. Yaquina Head Lighthouse isn’t just a guiding light for mariners but also an impressive piece of engineering history that has captivated visitors for decades. As lighthouse lovers, Kathy and I were thrilled that we might have the chance to explore the coastal gem. We were delighted that the interpretative center was open, and even more impressed by what we found inside.
Discovering the Fascinating Legacy of Yaquina Head Lighthouse
The moment we stepped into the interpretative center, we were immersed in exhibits covering the history of the lighthouse’s construction and its vital role in maritime safety along the central Oregon coast. The center showcased highlights of what were considered engineering marvels at the time. For instance, we learned that innovative double-walled brick construction was designed to withstand the harsh weather along the coast. Even better, the design has withstood the test of time. Over 370,000 bricks were meticulously imported to create a lighthouse that is both tall and durable. It’s hard to believe this incredible structure first shone its guiding light in 1873!

Our next stop was the stunning coastline and the lighthouse itself. Like other lighthouses, there is a group that works with the Bureau of Land Management to help with the maintenance of the lighthouse. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse, standing tall at 93 feet, is one of the oldest operating lighthouses in the state and has remained in remarkably good shape throughout its 150 years of service. The intricate Fresnel lens, once an architectural wonder of its time, still illuminates the way for sailors, just as it has done since its installation.
Final Thoughts and Looking Ahead
We didn’t get to climb the lighthouse, but our visit left us impressed with the enduring beauty and preservation of this historical gem. The stories of its lightkeepers were equally impressive. I’m always moved by the commitment of those who spent years dedicating their lives to helping others. Next week, I’ll have a special Halloween surprise! Don’t worry, it won’t be too spooky, but it will be fun!

13:14 for me.
My time was 10:34. That was a difficult puzzle for me. Very interesting story as I’m fascinated with lighthouses and their history.
Ya gotta love those lighthouses!
Very unique puzzle.
Nice picture. My time was 11:29.
8:10, beautiful
Allow this week at 10:04. Love lighthouses.
8:14 and a challenge
14.52 a bit tricky with all the spirals.
My time today was 4:52. I love to look at lighthouses, but I don’t like to climb them (fear of heights)!
I can’t blame you, Susan. The last time I climbed the inside of a lighthouse, I hit my head on a very hard metal support. My hat saved me, but I realized how tricky climbing them can be!
7:25 for me this morning, love these puzzles, thanks for going to the special effort to give them to us!

6:55 Although my husband and I haven’t seen this lighthouse, we did check out a few of the lighthouses next to the shores of the Great Lakes. Seems like a cool place to visit. Thanks for sharing.
