When it comes to iconic Southern California beach towns, Ventura is like that quirky cousin at the family reunion who shows up in Crocs and a Hawaiian shirt, leaving everyone to wonder how they got an invite. Sure, Santa Monica steals the show with its glamour, Venice Beach has its free-spirited circus, and Malibu is just flaunting its wealth like a peacock at a garden party. But Ventura? It’s the underrated gem that quietly sips its craft beer on the sandy sidelines, ready to drop some surprising wisdom. Stick around, and I’ll give you three reasons why Ventura is an underrated SoCal beach town that deserves a center-stage spot!
Mission San Buenaventura
Mission San Buenaventura is the ninth of California’s 21 missions. It, was founded on March 31, 1782, by Father Junípero Serra and was named after Saint Bonaventure, a 13th-century Catholic theologian who was canonized in 1482.
From its beginnings, the mission served as a crucial waypoint for Spanish settlers and missionaries on their journeys up the coast. Its tranquil gardens, adobe walls, and charming bell tower became a sanctuary for Native Americans, who came to learn new agricultural practices and craftsmanship, while the Spaniards sought to convert and integrate these indigenous populations into their colonial society.
Today, the mission stands as a beacon of history in Ventura, where visitors can wander through its serene grounds, marvel at its architecture, and appreciate the rich tapestry of cultural heritage that continues to thrive there. It offers not only a glimpse into the past but also serves as a vibrant community hub, celebrating the melding of cultures that defines Ventura itself.
Surfing, USA
Ventura, as part of its role as an underrated SoCal beach town, may not have inspired the famous Beach Boys song, but it does have a strong surf culture. But this isn’t just any surf culture, Ventura’s includes surfers of the four-legged variety. Oh yes, you read that right! Imagine adorable pooches in snazzy life jackets doing their best to steal the show as they ride the waves like furry Kamikazes, all while beachgoers cheer them on like they’re at the Super Bowl!
From golden retrievers that can shred with the best of ‘em to pint-sized poodles caught in the wind, these canine competitors chase the waves and glory with all the style and swagger of Olympic athletes. In fact, Ventura was home to one of the most famous surfing dogs, Haole. This yellow Labrador Retriever was not only known for his surfing skills, but loved by all for his work as a surf therapy dog for children with special needs.
In addition to surfing dogs, there are plenty of humans who ride the waves at some famous surfing locations. Surfers Point is right next to the Ventura Pier. Its got consistent waves and beautiful coastal views for everyone from beginners to advanced surfers. The other hot spot in town is C Street (California Street), which is a favorite of locals and, under the right conditions, those with a lot more experience. Whether you’ve got the itch to shred the waves or just watch from shore, Ventura’s got you covered. Hang ten…or, maybe just four.

Gateway to the Channel Islands
Ventura isn’t just a charming beach town; it also serves as the gateway to the breathtaking Channel Islands. These five islands just off the southern California coast are sometimes called “California’s Galápagos” due to their variety of wildlife and stunning natural beauty. After a quick boat ride to the islands, visitors can kayak with the dolphins, snorkel with the fishes, or just hike and watch the wildlife.
Now part of Channel Islands National Park, these islands are as close to paradise as you can get without needing a passport. Need to escape the ordinary? Hop the Island Packers ferry and immerse yourself in some of California’s most spectacular landscapes and let the Channel Islands whisk you away into a world of adventure and awe!
Final Thoughts and Looking Ahead
Ventura might not have the name recognition of its flashier coastal cousins, but it’s like finding that hidden track on your favorite album—unexpectedly awesome! From missionary history to surfing pups to island adventures that’ll make your Instagram followers green with envy, this unassuming beach town packs more punch than a triple espresso. So ditch the tourist traps, grab your sense of adventure (and maybe some dog treats), and you, too, can discover why Ventura is one of Southern California’s best-kept secrets. Trust me, your Crocs will thank you for the upgrade!

I do know about Ventura, I attended UCSB in the 70’s so it was en route to Los Angeles and other places.
There are also surfing dogs in Northern California beaches, especially Pacifica. Come visit!
I’ve heard about those dogs, Karen. There’s even a surfing championship there for dogs if I remember correctly!
My time today was 3:59. I loved reading about the surfing dogs. I live in a “beach state,” too, and the underrated beaches are always the best hidden gems!
I agree with you, Susan. Sadly, the popular beaches are simply, well, too popular!
