Pack your beach shorts, a heavy sweatshirt, and your magnifying glass, because we’re off to Cape Cod National Seashore. Stretching over 40 miles along the coast of Massachusetts, this picturesque destination offers something for everyone. Whether you are an avid nature lover, a history buff, or simply looking for a serene escape, Cape Cod National Seashore promises unforgettable experiences. And so, I’m including it in my 2024 Tour of America’s Amazing Places. This week’s jigsaw puzzle will give you a taste of this amazing area, but there’s so much more, including a 50-year-old murder mystery.
Cape Cod National Seashore Natural Beauty and More
Cape Cod National Seashore is renowned for its stunning landscapes. From serene beaches and sandy dunes to salt marshes and forest, the seashore offers diverse ecosystems that support a wide array of wildlife. But, did you know that Cape Cod National Seashore is not just about beautiful landscapes; it’s also rich in fascinating history? Here are some interesting tidbits about the area that may surprise you.
Presidential Vacation Spot
Cape Cod’s enchanting environment has attracted many visitors, including President John F. Kennedy. He loved spending his summers in the Hyannis Port area, just a short drive from the seashore.
Famous Lighthouses
There are many iconic lighthouses in this area, including Highland Light, Nauset Light, and Three Sisters Lighthouses, which consists of three small wooden lighthouses built in 1838.
A Pirate’s Haven
In the 18th century, Cape Cod was a haven for pirates. Here, they plundered merchant vessels for valuable goods such as textiles, spices, and rum. Some used isolated harbors and coves along the coast as hideouts and places to repair their ships.
The Graveyard of the Atlantic
The waters surrounding Cape Cod, particularly the area off Chatham, are often referred to as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” The name comes from the treacherous conditions and countless shipwrecks over centuries. The combination of strong currents, shifting sandbars, fog, and frequent storms creates extremely hazardous navigation conditions for mariners.
Mystery of the Dunes
It took the FBI 50 years to determine the identity of a woman who had been murdered at the seashore. Eventually, using DNA and genealogy, the FBI was able to identify the killer as the woman’s husband. Unfortunately, the FBI never did bring the killer to justice. Ironically, he died 20 years before authorities could identify the Lady of the Dunes.
Final Thoughts and Looking Ahead
Cape Cod National Seashore’s history and natural beauty are highlighted by its famous lighthouses, pirate lore, treacherous waters, and those amazing dunes. From Presidential vacations to shipwreck tales, the seashore is rich with intriguing stories.
