Stephen Kaminski is the author of two cozy mystery series: The Male Housekeeper Mysteries and the Damon Lassard Dabbling Detective series, both published by Cozy Cat Press. Corpse and Robbers is the latest Male Housekeeper Mystery.
In addition to his role as writer, Stephen is also a father, a CEO, an amateur chef, a huge dog and cat lover (he has a 120 lb Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, a Siberian Forest cat, and a rescued Russian Blue), and he loves all things British mystery and true crime.
Behind Corpse and Robbers
Stephen said he’s always been fascinated by complicated con artist schemes. He described his goal for this book as being to weave as many of those as possible into this book without overwhelming the reader.
“I spent a lot of time in my late teens / early 20s in Windsor, Ontario, so I decided to pay homage to that small part of the world, and included references to some of my favorite old, but now shuttered, haunts like The Honest Lawyer and Bar Bar Black Sheep.”
Research happens in odd places
Many years ago, his brother lived in an ‘apartment’ in a funeral home in exchange for doing some basic maintenance. “When visiting him, I was able to see the inner working of such a home and thought it would be a unique setting for a cozy mystery. He actually shared a refrigerator for his food with various body preservatives!”
Stephen wrote most of Corpse and Robbers during the Covid lockdown. He said it’s what kept him motivated through many of those long days and nights.
“My third book — Murder, She Floats — was set on a cruise ship. I had been on several cruises, but in doing research for that book, I not only took a ‘bridge tour’ that allowed me access to several areas of the ship off-limits to passengers, but I also convinced one of the staffers to show me additional staff-only areas like the staff lodging, staff recreational areas, and galley spaces below deck.”
