Watercraft and waterfalls – what a combination
This was one of my favorite photos from our land tour of New Zealand last year. We were on a boat the size of a large ferry and it was a very smooth ride—until we left Milford Sound and ventured out a short distance into the Tasman Sea. Within a few minutes of leaving the protected channel, we were being bounced around by the incredible power of the open sea.
Milford Sound is actually not a sound, but a fjord. It’s also a place of incredible beauty, and it’s a very easy place to sail because it is protected. The channel right of center in this photo leads out to the Tasman Sea. We went all the way out to the sea, then beat a hasty return to protected waters. All I can say is a little taste of the Tasman Sea was enough for me. Little did I know how much more of it we would be getting once we boarded our cruise ship!

This group of fur seals was just hanging out on the rocks. Not a bad job if you can get it!
This fur seal woke up when we cruised by and did a little stretch.
The emblems around the edges of the stained glass signify the countries involved in the conflict. The center commemorates the New Zealand military branches.
