Day 8 – Tuesday, March 26: Wellington through Cook Strait to Christchurch
North island to South island Cook Strait ferry – world’s most scenic voyages:
Another long day, started at 5:15am, bags out and breakfast at 6:30am, on the bus by 7:30am. The ferry left port at 9:00am and the ride is 3 1/2 hours from Wellington on north island to Picton on south island.

Once on board the ferry, Terry trying to translate to French for our fellow passenger Marie.

Farewell North Island…
And, welcome to South Island…

Picton port:
We had to board the coach and drive off the ferry, so no stops in Picton. However we will be back in port on a cruise excursion.

And we’re back on the coach in the transportation hold.

Water and a Crunchie what more could a girl need for a long coach ride!

Driving south from Picton:
This is some country with miles of vineyards.

Moving on further south.

A small wind farm. New Zealand is 85% renewable energy and they are working to improve that.

Back to the coast.

A little stone church being restored.

Miles of black sand beaches.

New Zealand Fur Seals playing in the pools.

Kaikoura-fishing town:
Charming little town for our afternoon cup of tea. 30 minute tea and comfort stop. Kaikoura is known for its crayfish. The crayfish sells for $130 NZ each and is mainly exported to Japan.
