Christine Nolfi is an award-winning author who writes heartwarming and inspiring fiction. Her 2011 debut, ‘Treasure Me,’ was a Next Generation Indie Awards finalist. Her fourth book in the Liberty Series explores the divide between our self-limiting expectations and the dreams we dare to follow. For this interview, Nolfi discussed her novels and what she’s trying to accomplish with them.
Nolfi said that she’s always been a storyteller, even before she started writing. “I was the kid on the street that could convince all the other kids they could fly. I was always telling stories. My best friend, Bobby Cooper, had a treehouse and I’d get all the kids gathered around and convince them we were all going to learn how to fly. It’s a wonder I didn’t break my legs or convince someone else to break theirs jumping out of a treehouse.”
“All of my novels,” said Nolfi, “including ‘Four Wishes,’ speak to the trials and the joys of our closest relationships—romantic, familial, those friendships that carry us through the most difficult events of our lives. I can’t begin a novel until I’ve built a solid foundation of realistic characters I’m confident the reader will find compelling.”
Nolfi described the lives those characters lead. “For instance, Meade Williams has a successful company, an ailing father—and a secret desire to find love at last. Dr. Mary Chance isn’t sure the time is right to expand her family. Birdie Kaminsky has married the man of her dreams, but yearns to grow closer to her powerful sister. And young Glade Wilson must confront the daunting truth that she’ll become a mother before finishing high school.”
The Midwest Book Review lists Nolfi’s novels as “highly recommended” and her novels have enjoyed bestseller status. Several factors came together for Nolfi in the writing of “Four Wishes.” She said, “A desire for excellence drives my writing career. The weeks when a novel sits on the bestseller list are certainly fun, but nothing delights like the private mail received from readers. I’ll continue to work with an eye to creating books that lend my fans a rich emotional experience.”
While writing “Four Wishes,” Nolfi saw the opportunity to enhance the emotional experience by giving her readers more of a character they had been asking about. “I was looking for a plot to bring together many of the characters from the earlier novels. Readers constantly ask for more on Birdie Kaminsky, the protagonist of ‘Treasure Me.’ I’m happy to report she has a large role in ‘Four Wishes,’ as does Mary Chance from ‘Second Chance Grill.’”
Nolfi said that one of the most challenging aspects in writing “Four Wishes” was in writing dialogue for two women with diametrically opposed life histories. She said, “It added some of the most humorous—and the most poignant—moments in the book.”
