Fans of humorous mysteries that transport the reader to a different place should consider adding Dee DeTarsio’s Haole Wood to their summer reading list.
Haole Wood begins with Jaswinder Park, a San Diego weather girl, receiving a call from her parents that her grandmother has been arrested on Maui for possession of pakalolo. Her grandmother, whom she calls Halmoni—the Korean name for grandmother—has lived alone on Maui for years. Jaswinder’s parents play the guilt card, telling Jaswinder that they are depending on her to drop everything and bail Halmoni out of jail.
