New York Times Notable Book of the Year author Deborah Crombie started life with what she calls “a rather checkered educational career.” Translation—she dropped out at age sixteen. But the future author of the popular Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James mystery novels, who would be nominated for multiple mystery awards, found her way back to school and, eventually, writing.
