The Magic of Hot Springs National Park

January 26, 2024 By Terry

Nature has a way of creating awe-inspiring wonders that leave us marveling at its beauty and power. One such marvel is the hot springs, a natural phenomenon that has fascinated humans for centuries. And there’s no better place to experience these geothermal wonders than at Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas.

Arkansas Hot Springs magic

It all started with a crashing of continents

The hot springs in this national park were formed through a fascinating geological process that occurred hundreds of millions of years ago. It started with the creation of the Ouachita Mountain range during the late Paleozoic era, caused by a collision of continents. This event created cracks and faults in the Earth’s crust.

Rainwater seeps into these cracks and travels deep into the Earth’s crust, where it is heated by the natural geothermal gradient. This heating process can take thousands of years. The heated water then rises back to the surface along the faults and cracks, resulting in the emergence of hot springs. These springs maintain a year-round temperature of up to 143°F (62°C) and are known for their purity, mineral content, and healing properties.

The magic of Hot Springs includes permanent residents

Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas is home to a wide variety of ‘permanent residents.’ Over 50 species of mammals are protected within the park, including Black bears, white-tailed deer, groundhogs, chipmunks, and squirrels.

The park also hosts a variety of other wildlife, from creepy crawlies to ray-finned fishes, amphibians, and birds. Birds are particularly abundant, with species like the Great Blue Heron, Golden Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, and Ruby-throated Hummingbird frequently sighted.

Visiting Hot Springs National Park

Hot Springs National Park attracts millions of visitors annually. In 2021, it reached a new record of 2,162,884 recreational visits. This significant increase, compared to the usual 1.5 million visitors, highlights the park’s popularity. Activities at the park include bathing in thermal waters, hiking scenic trails, and exploring historic bathhouse row. Camping facilities and picnic areas are also available for those seeking a longer stay. Can’t visit the park? No worries! You can still experience its beauty virtually through today’s jigsaw puzzle.

About Terry

I started out as a skip tracer. Just in case you don’t know, that’s the guy who finds the people who don’t want to be found. It was the little things—getting paid to lie—that made skip tracing the fun part of the job.

Those years of chasing deadbeats taught me many valuable life lessons, such as liars come from all walks of life, and always keep your car in the garage.

13.22 I did better this week. The border of white made the outside easy but the inside variations of color made it tricky.

When I started, I thought this was going to be easier than it was because of the border. Boy, did I get fooled!
