Many years ago when we were regular visitors to Hawaii, a friend of mine told me we needed to visit Liliuokalani Gardens in Hilo. We’d been to Hilo before but hadn’t paid attention to the park, so on our next trip, we made a point of going. That’s when I captured this photo of the red gazebo on the Big Island.

Photo of the Week – Red gazebo on the Big Island
The gardens began as a public park when Queen Liliuokalani donated five acres of land in 1907. Ten years later, the park grew to seventeen acres. Like several other gardens in Hawaii, the Liliuokalani Gardens are a version of a Japanese garden. Now more than a century old, the gardens remain a beautiful tribute to the Japanese workers who came to Hawaii to work on the plantations. For more information about the gardens, visit this post on Big Island Guide.
