Software wiki wacky

June 12, 2012 By Terry

Aloha, McKenna here. I hate it when software makes me feel stupid. How about you? Did you ever have a piece of software that you thought would make your life oh-so-much-simpler and instead, it ate away at your time like piranhas on fresh meat? Well, there are days when your best bet is to go find a good book, because the software gods are against you.

Who are the software gods? I’ve never actually met them, but I have it on good authority that they’re very powerful and have the ability to mess with your mojo in ways you never anticipated. For instance, you’re working along and all of a sudden the computer gives you a cryptic little message, “Operation cannot be completed. Error 0.”

Uh oh. What’s error “0?” Sounds serious. It’s so bad it didn’t even get a number? And it’s not in the documentation because—wait for it—that no longer exists. It’s all wiki and wacky now. What about a help forum? Nobody wants to talk about “error 0” there either.

Have you ever noticed that, as much information as that vast repository of knowledge we call the web holds, nobody else in the world has ever had the same problem as you? When you search—zip, nada. Those software gods, I’m telling you.

My guess about this mysterious error code is that it’s a ghost. The software gods give us these errors for one simple reason—because they can.

About Terry

I started out as a skip tracer. Just in case you don’t know, that’s the guy who finds the people who don’t want to be found. It was the little things—getting paid to lie—that made skip tracing the fun part of the job.

Those years of chasing deadbeats taught me many valuable life lessons, such as liars come from all walks of life, and always keep your car in the garage.
