This humpback whales photo originally came from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association website. While looking for this, I came across a story on thedailyvoicenews.com, which pointed out the lack of humpback whales in the 2016 calving season. The story quoted Ed Lyman, who is the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary’s large whale entanglement response coordinator. “Even though there are no formal surveys in December, the numbers clearly are down.” In fact, according to the story, the numbers are down by about 10,000 whales. Is this another effect of El Nino? Or, something far more serious?
