1lb lean ground beef or turkey (You could also use a combination that includes ground pork plus the turkey or beef.)
1 1/3cup tomato sauce
3/4cup ketchup
2tbsp brown sugar
2tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1tbsp yellow mustard
1tbsp red wine vinegar (We use rice vinegar)
1tsp paprika
Instructions
1
Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to caramelize in some spots, 6 to 7 minutes.
2
Add the garlic and saute, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute.
3
Stir in the ground meat and cook, breaking it up until it is browned, no longer pink in the middle and cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes.
4
Stir in the rest of the ingredients along with salt and black pepper to taste and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and heated through, 5 to 6 minutes.
5
While sauce is thickening, grill or toast the buns.
6
Spoon sauce over buns and add any desired toppings such as shredded cheddar cheese, green onions, etc.
